Major areas of expertise:
- stone selection (assessment of quality, suitability, cost, availability, technical information) and presentation
- report on cost benefits based on stone selection (type, thickness, colour, texture, size, finish)
- test stone (critical analysis of stone quality); includes analysis of geotechnical characteristics, performance assessment as per destined function, relationship of stone to design, durability
- evaluate quarries and quarrymasters to ensure appropriate workmanship for the supply of quality stone
- review procedures of all activities in stone production (e.g. explosives use) and in processing
- establish and maintain quality control on stone at different stages – from quarry blocks, through processing, testing, shipping, supply and fixing; includes random and final inspections
- maintain close liaison with client, architect, engineers and construction managers during all stages of stone supply and installation
- instigate production schedules (quarrying, processing, fixing)
- prepare meaningful specifications and tender documents relating to natural stone
- review tenderers, their documentation and the quality assurance programmes of all stone suppliers
- locate, delineate, evaluate and assess potential quarry sites; commence quarries; review progressive quarry development to ensure continued viability
- advise on best quarrying techniques for granite, marble, sandstone, etc; train personnel in all aspects of quarrying
- advise on most appropriate quarrying equipment and machinery given the location
- procure supply of all Australian granite, marble and sandstone for construction and landscaping
- provide documentation, on the repair, reconstruction and preservation of natural stone in buildings, statues and monuments
- locate exact source of original building stone for restoration or reconstruction; establish supply; extract required stone
- assess concrete structure/composition and causes of failure
- assess, test and examine quality control on sand for industrial purposes and construction
- assess, test and review quality control on blast furnace slag products; suggest improvements
- prepare environmental impact statements for quarries and pits
- assess stone for slope stability control in highway construction, as well as dam, tunnel, subway and airport runway construction
- litigation involving geoscientific matters (expert witness)
- problem assessment (trouble-shooting) in all areas utilizing or exploiting natural stone
- provide guidelines on the training of personnel in a wide range of analytical techniques, sampling and drilling procedures related to diamond/sapphire exploration and exploitation (Asia)
- undertake specific mineral commodity reviews
- undertake complete tenement evaluations and development of drilling/exploration programmes
- assess local and regional potential of mineral resource in relation to tenement acquisition
